High Blood Pressure Q & A

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure means that your blood is exerting too much pressure on your arterial walls. To determine this, your Chesapeake Wellness Center provider simply and painlessly measures your blood pressure through several complete cycles of your heartbeat. The systolic, or top number, measures the force on your arterial walls during the pumping phase of your heartbeat. The diastolic, or bottom number, measures the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats.

The resulting numbers then fall into one of the following categories.

  • Normal
  • Elevated
  • Hypertension 1
  • Hypertension 2

With higher blood pressure numbers, your arteries are under extreme stress, which can lead to serious cardiovascular issues, including heart attack and stroke.

What are possible causes of high blood pressure?

There are many factors that can lead to high blood pressure, including:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Too much sodium in your diet
  • Ethnicity
  • Age
  • Family history
  • Lack of exercise
  • Stress
  • Co-occurring medical conditions, like diabetes or sleep apnea
  • Smoking or alcohol consumption

As you can see from this list, many factors are outside of your control, such as age or ethnicity. The good news is that there are at least as many potential causes that are well within your power to change. That’s where the team at Chesapeake Wellness Center can help.

How is high blood pressure treated?

If your Chesapeake Wellness Center provider determines that your blood pressure is high, they will work with you to create a treatment plan that best fits your needs and lifestyle built on a combination of the following.

  • Dietary changes
  • Exercise recommendations
  • Prescription medications
  • Weight management

The good news is that blood pressure can be managed with the right combination of lifestyle changes and medication.
