6 Signs You Have an Irregular Period

Irregular periods are often related to hormonal shifts caused by unexpected stress, increased exercise, or another temporary glitch in your reproductive cycle. However, if the irregularity persists, it can indicate an underlying problem that requires medical attention.
Our family practice team at Chesapeake Wellness Center, with offices in Cecilton and Elkton, Maryland, provides primary care services for individuals of all ages. We’re also happy to foster an environment of expert care and compassion for women’s health issues.
Here’s what you should know about the signs of an irregular period and what it might mean about your overall health.
What’s a ‘regular’ period anyway?
Exploring the characteristics of an irregular period starts with defining what’s regular. Most of us learn in health class that a regular period usually comes every 21-35 days, lasts 2-7 days, and has a fairly consistent flow from month to month.
Thus, a regular period can vary from one person to the next. So, a better question might be, what’s regular for you?
It’s one of the reasons health care providers ask you to track your menstrual cycle, including the timing, length, and type of flow (light, moderate, heavy).
However, although everyone’s “normal” looks slightly different, significant swings can signal that something is off.
Signs your period might be irregular
Here are some red flags that indicate your cycle might not be running like clockwork:
Your period shows up at random times
A cycle that varies widely from month to month is a classic sign of irregularity. For instance, if you count 25 days between periods one month, 45 days the next, and then 39 days, you could have an underlying problem, such as a thyroid disorder.
In this case, treating the thyroid disorder can help regulate your menstrual cycle.
You skip periods (and you’re not pregnant)
Stress, weight changes, PCOS, thyroid issues, or perimenopause can cause missed periods. If it happens regularly (or irregularly), it’s worth checking out.
Your flow is all over the place
Light spotting one month, then soaking through pads the next? Inconsistent bleeding patterns can signal a hormonal imbalance or other underlying issue.
Your period lasts too long or not long enough
If bleeding lasts more than seven days, or your period is done in less than two, that’s outside the typical range.
You have pain that’s worse than what’s typical
Cramps can be brutal and are generally expected. However, if the pain interferes with your life or gets worse over time, irregular periods could be part of an underlying problem like endometriosis or fibroids.
You bleed between periods
Bleeding between periods isn’t typical, even if it’s light, especially if it’s frequent. It could point to issues like hormonal imbalances or uterine polyps.
When to see a doctor
If your period feels unpredictable, painful, or just “off,” it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment.
Especially if:
- You haven’t had a period for three or more months (and you're not pregnant)
- You bleed heavily for more than seven days
- Your cycle is consistently shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days
- You’re trying to conceive, and your cycles are irregular
Irregular periods are common but shouldn’t be ignored. Schedule an evaluation at Chesapeake Wellness Center today. Call the office or request an appointment online.
